John Williams becomes Catholic bishop of Boston.

Williams is appointed following the death of John Bernard Fitzpatrick. The diocese at this time includes 116 priests ministering to a membership of some 300,000. Installed on March 11, 1866, he is appointed the first archbishop of Boston on May 2, 1875.
